WHERE IT BROKE
“The break is the best part of it.”
Nine square panels, each built up in blocks of matte black at slightly different heights, hung as one field. A stepped seam of gold leaf crosses them corner to corner, changing direction at every panel edge.
Nothing is smooth. The blocks sit proud of one another by a few millimetres, so the whole surface is a shallow city seen from above, and the gold is the one road through it.
Each panel is finished separately and matched by hand at the joins. The gilding is laid over the raised edges, so it is the first thing to catch as you cross the room.
