COUNTED IN THE DARK
“Three of them still catch the light.”
The companion to Kept Count, worked in black instead of burnt earth. The same close rows of hand-pressed marks run the width of the panel, and three near the lower centre are finished in gold leaf.
In black the rows almost disappear. The piece is read by shadow rather than by colour, and the gold does the whole work of holding the eye.
Modelled in relief with the tool marks left showing, then pigmented matte so that nothing on the panel reflects except the gilding.
