WHAT THE HAND KEPT

Rows of small raised marks run edge to edge across a ground of burnt earth — close to a hundred of them, each pressed by hand, none of them quite the twin of its neighbour. Three near the lower centre are finished in gold leaf.
It reads as a tally: a record of something counted daily and never explained. The eye goes to the gold first, then travels back along the rows looking for the rule that put it there.
Modelled in relief with the tool marks left showing. The terracotta is a pigment ground rather than a glaze, so the surface stays matte and takes the light dry.
